Just how accessible is your website?
There are over 1 million people registered as blind or partially sighted in the UK alone. There are a further 700,000 people who have a sight problem which makes it difficult for them to read, standard print. It is important to consider people who have both visual or physical impairment when designing a website. This is especially important when your site is a large corporate organisation or service industry supplier.
People with special needs should be able to surf the internet much easier if your web design company plan ahead and are familiar with the correct accessibility practices.
The implementation of Section 21 of the Disability Discrimination Act in October of 1999 means that there is now a 'legal obligation' for websites to meet the needs of your blind and partially sighted customers.
Adopting such measures will ensure that not only will your website comply with the law but aid your site in becoming more accessible to all. Such practices can also have positive connotations when your site is viewed on alternative platforms such as WebTV. It also does NOT mean that function will destroy the design of your site. When constructed correctly, a site can be equally as effective, if not more so.
